I’d like to tell you about gender equality and how it works on my home planet Venus. So to do this I’ll start at the beginning, a discussion of our history and language. You see, I am a spirit child and I live on Venus with my family who are what you may call ethereal or heavenly. That is to say we don’t have physical bodies as you do on Earth and we communicate telepathically. The core of our language has to do with who we are and where we come from. We place much emphasis on the role each of us plays in our society.
Girls and boys on Venus are traditionally regarded as being equal in status. This is reflected in the words we use to describe them as children and when they reach adulthood. When boys reach maturity they are known as Mar and girls are known as Vef. These two nouns both have three letters (equality) and signify the planets Mars and Venus. In fact my personal name is also Vef just like all the other girls on Venus and all the boys have the given name Mar. Yes! Plural nouns do apply and we have words for those too. (See Our Philosophy on this blog.)
I am sadly aware that on your planet the word ‘woman’ is used to indicate an adult girl, whereas a boy is called ‘man’ when he matures. Why don’t you have an independent word for grown up girls? Woman seems to be a rather possessive noun, belonging to man. I say it should go as it’s a second class word. In my opinion Vef is a better word to use as a description for an adult female person.
Vef has dual meaning and no prizes for guessing where the first two letters originate from. Okay so.. it’s easy. Ve is taken from Venus and f is added, which is the first letter of flower. Sometimes I enjoy the notion of being a fairy and thus Vef can also mean Venus fairy. Flowers and what they represent are indispensable to my story. (More about that can be read in my coming book.)
Language plays an important role in gender equality and using the right words is vital to a harmonious relationship between the sexes. I’m perhaps not the best at explaining myself but I hope when I visit your world all this will become clear to you.
